What Is a Stroke?

A stroke is when there is a problem with the blood supply to the brain. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to your brain cells. The brain is our control centre. It controls how we think, move, feel and communicate. If the blood supply is interrupted, then brain cells are affected. How a stroke affects you depends on the area of the brain that is injured and to what extent. When the symptoms of a stroke last only a short time (less than an hour), this is called a transient ischemic attack (TIA).

Stroke is a leading cause of disability in Australia. Common symptoms following a stroke include weakness of the arm or leg, reduced mobility, communication and swallowing problems, thinking difficulties, fatigue and pain. Many people discharged home from acute hospitals following a stroke continue to experience difficulties related to stroke. If this sounds like you or someone you know, then our stroke rehabilitation programs may be of assistance.

What Are the Most Common Types of Stroke?

There are two types of stroke: ischaemic stroke (caused by a blockage to the blood flow to the brain) and haemorrhagic stroke (caused by bleeding into the brain – also known as intracerebral haemorrhage, or around the brain – called a subarachnoid haemorrhage).

Treatment and rehabilitation after stroke can help you to relearn skills and improve your quality of life. The sooner you begin stroke rehabilitation, the more likely you will be to regain abilities and skills.

The Sydney Stroke Rehabilitation Centre at MetroRehab Hospital specialises in rehabilitation for stroke patients. If you or a loved one has experienced a stroke, there is no better place to turn.

“I presented to Metro Rehab at the end of August after a fall. I sustained a small fracture in the cup of the hip which meant I needed rehab in order to walk again. I have cerebral palsy which posed extra challenges to rehabilitation.

The excellent staff and facilities at MetroRehab enabled me to be discharged after a month of intense daily physio and hydrotherapy coupled with frequent monitoring from the occupational therapist.

The two features I really liked were the way in which all the components of the MR operation worked together very collaboratively and the positive atmosphere that pervaded the whole facility. This is a place where the cleaners are appreciated and known by name!”
