What is a Neurological Disorder?

A neurological disorder is any condition relating to the nervous system. These disorders can result in such symptoms as paralysis, muscle weakness, poor coordination, loss of sensation, seizures, confusion, pain and altered levels of consciousness. There are many recognised neurological disorders, some relatively common, but many rare.

What Types of Neurological Disorders Can Our Programs Assist With?

  • Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a chronic disorder in which those diagnosed may experience recurrent, unprovoked seizures.
  • Alzheimer’s disease, and other types of dementia: Alzheimer’s can affect a person’s memory and cognitive abilities. Depending on how severe the condition, it can seriously interfere with daily living activities.
  • Migraines: Migraines are a type of headache of varying intensity, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine headaches can cause throbbing in one particular area that can vary in intensity.
  • Cerebral Palsy: Cerebral palsy is a congenital disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture caused by brain damage.
  • Autoimmune conditions like Guillain-Barré Syndrome: Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a  condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves and may be triggered by an acute bacterial or viral infection.
  • Post-Trauma or Injury: After an accident such as a workplace injury or car accident, you may experience neurological symptoms such as lack of mobility, loss of movement, impaired speech and more.

What are the Symptoms?

Symptoms of neurological disorders can vary pending on the condition. Some of the most common symptoms seen in neurological disorders include muscle weakness, partial or complete loss of sensation in limbs, seizures, difficulty reading and writing, and impaired memory.

What We Offer

We offer the latest state-of-the-art equipment in neurological rehabilitation.

LiteGait & Ergo trainers

LiteGait and Ergo trainer devices support proper posture and reduces the need to weight bear. This eliminates worries about balance and facilitates the training of coordinated lower extremity movement. It also  allows the clinician to manually assist the legs and pelvis to achieve proper gait patterns.

Bioness L300

The Bioness L300 system lifts your foot if you have drop foot, which can occur as a result of diseases of the central nervous system. This improves your gait pattern, making it smoother and safer. It also stimulates the nerves and is done using functional electrical stimulation with small electrical pulses.

Saebo is a custom fabricated mechanical orthosis that is designed and fitted to the body to allow support for upper limb retraining including reaching and grasping. Saebo allows patients with very little residual hand function to immediately begin performing activities, thereby forging new pathways in the brain.

“I presented to Metro Rehab at the end of August after a fall. I sustained a small fracture in the cup of the hip which meant I needed rehab in order to walk again. I have cerebral palsy which posed extra challenges to rehabilitation.

The excellent staff and facilities at MetroRehab enabled me to be discharged after a month of intense daily physio and hydrotherapy coupled with frequent monitoring from the occupational therapist.

The two features I really liked were the way in which all the components of the MR operation worked together very collaboratively and the positive atmosphere that pervaded the whole facility. This is a place where the cleaners are appreciated and known by name!”
